There are two ways to reduce the number of municipalities, annexation and consolidation. In the case of consolidation, one of the important problems is how to name new communities. In this paper, I analyzed how new community names were selected, and pointed out the problems about them. About 50% of newly consolidated communities adopted one of former community names. About 40% adopted the famous placenames of the area. And 10% invented new names. Two new tendencies were found in naming. (1) In case of invention, words denoting favorable images but have no relations with the places are often used as new community names. (2) In some cases community names are written in only KANA characters.
