This study is a sequel to our previous report in 2006 which examined the discrepancies between the true diagnosis and the diagnosis recorded in externally submitted documents. The Japanese term for schizophrenia was changed from seishin-bunretsu-byo (mind-split-disease) to togo-shitcho-sho (integration disorder) in August 2002.We examined documents externally submitted in 2003 or later, and compared them with the result of our previous study which reported the recorded diagnosis in documents submitted in 2000 or earlier. While schizophrenia (seishin-bunretsu-byo)was recorded as the diagnosis in 70.5% of the public documents in or before 2000,the number recorded as schizophrenia (togo-shitcho-sho)has risen to 94.7% since 2003.Similarly,the figure rose from 5.9 % to 40% in private documents. It is presumed that the rise in the frequency of recording schizophrenia as the diagnosis is affected by the fact that the rate of informing patients of the diagnosis of schizophrenia has increased due to the change in the Japanese name of the disease. The wider use of international classification systems, more patient participation in treatment, and medical welfare policy are also likely to have had an effect.
