We have researched the history of a group home that was built within a hospital area five years ago. During these five years, a total of eight mentally handicapped people stayed there. Upon arrival their average age was fifty-three, Five of them had been staying in the mental hospital for more than twenty years. They can be divided into two groups. The first group kept trying to go back to the outside community. They had more information, knowledge, and guidance for surviving in the community. In contrast, the second group expected to remain in the group home semi-permanently. Five of them had three months of concentrated training, to make simple meals and to keep their own medication schedules. Two of them moved to nursing homes after staying for one or two years. Three of them had a recurrence of psychotic symptoms ; two of them were thought to be due to their inability to compromise with each other. However, these problems were found early enough not to require admissions. Living in the group home also gave the man opportunity to expand their horizons e.g. shopping, taking pleasure trips to nearby areas, and so on. Now, we have to think how we can help them who want to get out here and lead an independent life.
