Manual muscle testing is an important clinical tool to determine the patient's muscle strength. Manual muscle testing originated in the study of muscle function in patients with poliomyelitis in the United States in the early 1900s. Although many mechanical equipments have been developed, it remains an important clinical tool for assessing the muscular movement. Testing methods, however, may vary among therapists : for example, Kendall and McCreary vs. Daniels and Worthingham. The latter method has been popular in Japan. Their "MUSCLE TESTING-TECHNIQUES OF MANUAL EXAMINAITION-" has long been a textbook for students of physical therapy and occupational therapy. This book has now reached the 5th edition. A number of changes have been made for 30 years. I made a comparison between the 4th and 5th edition to make the improved points clear. In the 5th edition, the following changes are found : 1.Measurement of the range of joint motion is added. 2.Illustration is revised. 3.Terminology is updated. 4.Explanatory materials for the tests are expanded.
