Basic Research on Aesthetic Treatment of Forest (I) Regarding the Construction and aesthetic Thinning of Young Stand in Japanese Red Pine : The Minamiminowa Municipal Forest was chosen as the Subject of the Study

In Japan, the recent remarkable economical growth brought about a sudden cityward tendency of the population. And the redundant population and lack of nature will henceforth become more and more serious problems in many cities. Additionally, to meet the national request for outdoor recreation, a tree planting campaign and effective forest management has attracted special attention in these days. With due regard to these points, we have carried out the basic research for the study on aesthetic treatment of forest and its landscape design. This time, our investigation was performed on the following points. I The construction of young stand in Japanese Red Pine. (Pinus densiflora S. et Z,) II Aesthetic thinning of young stand in Japanese Red Pine. A summary of the result is shown below. (I) The construction of young stand in Japanese Red Pine in these area was devided into following four types which are shown in Fig. 5-7 and 14-17. As in these Fig. they are too much crowded together with small trees. (2) In case of aesthetic thinning the division of tree form class is shown in Table 4. (3) As the result of aesthetic heavy thinning, as in Fig. 9-13, 18-21, and Table 6-7, the rate of density was reduced to 20-40%, and mixture rate of species excepting Japanese Red Pine was increased relatively and the ratio of Japanese Red Pine was reduced. Thus the construction of stand was changed from pure forest type to mixd forest type and forest appearance changed from dark forest type to sunny type. Deciduous hard wood such as Betula Tauschii Koidz., Quercus serrata Thunb., Quercus acutissima Carruthers. And shurubs such as Rhododendron japonicum Suringer, Euonymus alatus Sieb, and Spiraea japonica L.f. are mixed and forest appearance are rich in variety.
