Two-factor experiment was carried out twice to examine for effects of paper sieves to prevent sand drop (Factor A) on tsutsugamushi extracting efficiency of Suzuki' s Tullgren funnel and to compare population densities of tsutsugamushi in litter and soil of different depths (Factor B). Meshes of the funnel were covered with differently slitted paper sieves that closed 66 and 91 % of meshes, respectively,p rior to place samples on them. Litter and soils from 0 2a nd 2- 5cm depths were taken separately as samples from 20 X 20 cm quadrats at Miasa(Experiiment 1) and Iida (Experiment 2) in the late autumn,w hen tsutsugamushi is abundant seasonally. Even the sieve that closed 91 % of meshes seemed to have no undesirable effects on extraction of tsutsugamushi,a nd it prevented sand drop satisfactory. This suggests a way of improving the funnel. Distribution pattern of tsutsugamusni in litter and soil varried according to the localities of sampling. Population density was the highest in soil from 0-2 cm depth and decreased significantly in soil from 2- 5c m depth and 1it t er in this order at Miasa, while it was almost even in the three layers at Iida.
