A general concern of this study is the conceptual organization which a second language learner develops as s/he learns vocabulary in the target language. More specifically, we investigate interlexical judgements by Japanese learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) about a semantic network of English basic verbs. In this study, a semantic network refers to a mental representation of lexical items which are semantically related to each other, and tend to be judged closer to certain elements than to others. In this study, an experiment was conducted with three semantically related verbs, take, hold, and keep, each being polysemous. The study examined which dictionary senses were stressed as prototypical by one American group and one Japanese EFL group. Twenty 11-point scales were devised to measure the perceived prototypicality of senses attached to take, hold, and keep. The overall results suggested: (2) The meanings of the three target items were clearly distinguished by the native speaker group, while they were much less clearly distinguished among the Japanese EFL subjects; (2) both native and Japanese EFL groups rely on their prototypes in differentiating the semantic boundaries of related items, but the nonnative speaker's prototypes are more restricted than the native speaker's prototypes.
