The purpose of this study was to clarify feelings against wounds after operation in chest or abdomen. 160 postoperative patients after one to six months were studied by using a structured questionnaire. The results were as follows. 1. Most patients saw wounds when they taked a bath, or were changed their bandages. They saw wounds by themselves on and after one week. 2. When patients saw wounds on the first time, 65. 8 percent of them were reconciled, and 59 percent of them felt it's not so small as they had imagined. On the other hand, a few patients felt anger and sadness. 3. Feeling against wounds was depended on the age and sex. There were not relationship between feeling and size of wounds or days after operation. 4 . Patients were informed insufficiently for wounds. 27. 6 percent of them wanted to explain about site and length of incision, healing process. 5. To compare with thier imaginations feelings against wounds were severe about 40 percent of the patients. Most of them felt unpleasant impression on their wounds. 6. Patients had good feelings when phisicians and nurses appreciated thier healing processes. And patients with same room encouraged mutually through their own experiences. Finally, the most pleasant thing to them were kind and warm words from thier families.
