Utilization of Dietary Yeasts by Chickens

The purpose of this study was to examine if yeasts A, B and C can fully replace isolated soybean meal as a sole protein source in chicken diet with nutritional satisfaction. Isolated soybean diet (control) and yeast diets A, B and C all contained 21. 33 protein and had the same compositions of essential amino acids. They were fed to 1-week-old Single Comb White Leghorn male chickens ad libitum for 20 days. No significant differences in feed consumption and ME intake between control and diet A or B were observed, but ratios of ME to GE of diets A and B, and body weight gain and a ratio of gain to feed of diet B were significantly higher than those of control (P<0.05). However, on diet C feed consumption, ME intake and body weight gain tended to be lower than those on control diet, although gain/feed and ME/GE ratios were almost the same in the two dietary groups. Nitrogen intake and total nitrogen excretion tended to be higher in diets A and B and to be lower in diet C than in control diet although not sig-nificant. The proportions of uric acid N in total excretory nitrogen in diets A, B and C were significantly decreased as compared with those in control diet (P<0.05), and similar tendencies were observed in uric acid excretion (diet C, P<0.05) and urinary uric acid N excretion per ingested nitrogen (diets A and C). Dietary nitrogen utilization (N retention/N intake) was not significantly different between control diet and diet A, B or C. It is concluded from these results that yeasts A and B can fully replace isolated soybean meal as a sole protein source in chicken diet with nutritional satisfaction and suggested that uric acid production in chickens is depressed by feeding the yeast diets.
