Wind-Driven Currents in Lake Suwa

The wind-induced circulating currents in Lake Suwa, 14 km² in area and only 4m in mean depth, are investigated by numerical and observational methods. The linearized equations of motion for the steady flow are used on the assumption that a constant wind is blowing over the shallow homogeneous lake, The numerical solutions for stream function and two-dimentional velocities are obtained as a function of depth and horizontal position. The surface currents are measured by a continuous telescopic trace of the movement of drifting floats. Both results are in good agreement. The vertical distributions of the velocities show the formation of a finite depth Ekman spiral in a closed sea.
