The precise construction of functional molecular materials, which are formed by the self-organization of designed functional molecular building units, is a subject of great importance because it controls the macroscopic properties of nanoscopic molecular devices. π-Conjugated disk-like molecules such as triphenylenes, hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronenes, porphyrins, and phthalocyanines have been well studied as molecular components for the construction of electroopitcal molecular devices. These disk-like molecules can assemble into long one-dimensional columnar assemblies through their strong intermolecular □-□ interaction. The columnar assemblies possess significant long-range order and anisotropic electrical properties.
