Clay-coated nylon fiber was fabricated by dipping a raw fiber in aqueous clay colloids. Photo-resistivity of the coated fiber, especially toughness for uv-light, was improved. For an example, tensile strength of an uncoated nylon fiber decreased by 20% of the original one, however, the clay coated fiber showed slight decrease in the strength. The fiber also showed higher dyeability to basic dyes, because the surface of the fiber is covered with the anionic sheet of the clay. Clay coating can easily switch and modify the affinity of the nylon fiber. In addition, clay minerals are known as safer materials than radical trap stabilizers for nylons, therefore the clay-coat processing will also be a cleaner production system.
