Color Images in Herman Melville : A Note on "Pallidness"
時松, 賢二
Symbolism is the intrinsic mode of Melville's writings, and various attempts on the part of critics have therefore been made to explore the nature of Melville's symbolism. This article dealing with color images in Melville's works is intended to be a contribution to the study of his symbolism. My consideration with respect to the color images is confined to the color of the face, especially the cheek, of the characters Melville portrays in his works. After a brief consideration of the "rosy" cheeks which are symbolic of health and some other primitive qualities, I consider the "pallid" cheeks, wherein Melville seems to feel something grand, tragic, and heroic. Pallidness as a color in some of Melville's works is a symbol and is associated with the miserable and tormented face of Christ.
