This is because they all derived from one and the same construction, that is, NP+beon/wesan/weorpan+participle, where the participle, present or past, functioned as an adjective, so that each of them might have developmental phenomena similar to the other two or various linguistic phenomena which might stimulate the development of the other constructions. On the basis of this hypothesis, there are discussed mainly the reason why the progressive construction began to be used suddenly with a high frequency and the functions similar to those inthe Present Day English during the period 1700 to 1800 and the reason why the stative verbs came into use in the progressive construction in the Present Day English period.
