We call it the Hebrew progressive form here. This is a tentative study on the influence of the Hebrew progres-sive form on the use of the English progressive form in English Biblical trans- lations. Firstly, the progressive forms of the following translated versions of the Old Testament were investigated: Tyndale's Bible (Genesis and Exodus) published in 1530, the Authorized Version (Genesis, Exodus, Job, Psalms and Nehemiah) published in 1611, Purver's Bible (Genesis) published in 1764 and the New English Bible (Genesis) published in 1970, and the progressive forms which are used in these materials were compared with the corresponding Hebrew expressions. The following are significant results of the comparison: The progressive forms in Tyndale's Bible correspond to the Hebrew progressive form in about 62.5% of all the cases, those in the Authorized Version in about 77.2%, those in Purver's Bible in about 77%, and those in the New English Bible in about 58%. These facts show that the Hebrew progressive form is a prime cause of an inducement of appearance of the progressive form in the English Biblical translations, especially in the translated versions in the Early Modern English period, when the use of the progressive forms was not common.  Secondly, there were examined the progressive forms of the Four Gospels of two indirect Biblical translations: two versions of the Wycliffite Bible (c. 1385 and c. 1395), and one direct translation: the Authorized Version. And Latin and Greek expressions corresponding to their progressive forms were investigated respectively. The result of the investigation is summarized as follows: The progressive forms appear unnaturally with more frequency in the earlier version of the Wycliffite Bible (47 exx. ) than in the Authorized Version (35 exx.). Even those in the later version of the Wycliffte Bible (34 exx.) appear almost with the same frequency as those in the Authorized Version. This unnatural linguistic phenomenon is due to a frequent use of the Latin construction 'sum+the present participle'. In the Wycliffite Bible, the Latin construction is rendered faithfully into English, especially in the earlier version. The frequent use of the Latin construction in the Latin New Testa-ment is caused by the extraordinary abundance of the Greek construction 'εζμξ+the present participle'. According to Greek linguists or philologists,the development of the Greek construction was not far advanced in Hellenistic Greek, not even in the popular style of the papyri, and the Greek construction in the New Testament is strongly supported by the Hebrew and Aramaic progressive forms.
