Kita and Mt. Senjo in the Southern Japan Alps in July and August of 2002 and 2003. From transect counts at Mt. Kita, we observed a total of 164 individuals (corrected numbers 31.55/km/transect count) comprising 15 species of butterflies in the Tanisuji route and a total of 96 individuals (corrected nos. 8.26) comprising 14 species in the Ryosen route (only July data). The dominant species were Erebia niphonica Janson in the Tanisuji route and Pieris napi (Linnaeus) in the Ryosen route. By transect counts at Mt. Senjo, we observed a total of 139 individuals (corrected nos. 21.72) comprising 16 species of butterflies in the Umanose route and a total of 246 individuals (corrected nos. 18.12) comprising 9 species in the Senjo route. The dominant species were Inachis io (Linnaeus) in the Umanose route and Papilio machaon Linnaeus in the Senjo route. Characteristic butterfly communities in the Southern Japan Alps were of alpine and nymphalid butterflies. Fixed point counts showed that most butterflies appeared in the morning but abruptly disappeared in afternoons when there was bad weather. The correlation coefficient between the number of observed individuals and the luminous intensity (lux) indicated a highly positive relationship. The dominant species observed by fixed point counts were E. niphonica on Mt. Kita, and E. niphonica in a sub alpine zone and I. io in an alpine zone on Mt Senjo.
