"めん羊における繁殖季節の人為的統御の一法として，日長変更およびメラトニン給与の季節外発情・排卵誘起効果を調べた。第１実験は３月に開始，サフォーク種成雌未経産，経産各２頭を最初４週間16時間明，８時間暗の長日条件で，次いで５週間10時間明，14時間暗の短日条件で飼育した。実験第５週より雄と同居させた。第２実験は経産５頭を用いて４月末より始め，４㎎／頭／日のメラトニンをアルコール溶液にし子牛用ペレットに噴霧したものを，10週の間，毎日午後２～３時に給与した。第４週以後同様給与を雄にも行い第７週以後雌雄を同居させた。排卵，発情周期回帰のチェックは血漿プロジェステロン定量により行った。　第１実験の長日／短日処理では発情・排卵の誘起ないし同回帰の促進はみられなかった。短日処理の期間が短か過ぎたためではないかと思われる。　メラトニン給与実験では発情周期回帰の明らかな促進がみられた。全頭で６月下旬～７月上旬のホルモン給与期間中から既に発情，交尾行動が始まり，うち４頭は７月中に受胎した。受胎交尾日の平均は７月11日で，この日付は近隣地域で飼養される正常雌めん羊の受胎交尾日平均より約２ケ月半早い。",
