The degree of dullness in the stomatal function was estimated by the dropping gradient in the time course of relative transpiration rate of detached leaves. 1. In the spur leaves of the Bartlett which is a sensitive cultivar to the leaf burn, the dullness of stomatal function was observed at the middle June to the late July. On the other hand, in those of the Red Bartlett which is an insensitive cultivar to the leaf burn, the stomatal function keeps the sharpness at this stage, and the dullness was observed at the middle to late August. 2. The dullness of stomatal function of the basal leaves of Bartlett shoot which were sensitive to the leaf burn was observed at the middle June. In contrast, that of the apical leaves which were insensitive to the leaf burn was observed about 1 month later. At the late August, however, all leaves dulled extremely. 3. The stomatal function of shoot leaves of the Bartlett was the sharpest in the 5 to 20 days old immature leaves, by contrast, those of the 20 to 25 days old declined rapidly, and more than the 50 days old dulled extremely. 4. The mean days required for reaching maximum leaf area, maximum stomatal length and minimum stomatal density after foliation were about 20 days in shoot leaves of the Bartlett. 5. Leaf characteristics such as leaf water content, specific leaf weight and percentage of leaf contraction by desiccation in shoot leaves of the Bartlett were changed remarkably in the immature stage, but those characteristics in the mature leaves more than the 25 days old were nearly constant. 6. Relative transpiration rate from the cuticle on upper surface of Bartlett leaves was slightly higher in the young 3-day-old leaves, but there was no significant difference among the other old leaves.
