Five groups of mother, suckling 4, 7, 10, 13 or 16 young experimentally, were set up and each group consisted of five mothers. Number of dead young, the weight of a litter, litter weight gains and the variance due to the maternal effect in the weight gain of young were measured. The results obtained were summarized as follows. 1) It was found that some young were dead in the groups of mother suckling 13 and 16 young during early period of nursing stage, indicating these numbers of young per mother were over the limit of nursing ability. 2) Litter weight gain increased as the number of suckling young per mother increased up to 10 suckling young but further increse could not be found in the groups of 13 and 16 suckling young. 3) The maximum maternal effect on the weight gains of young largely due to the milk production was found up to the group of 10 suckling young. 4) These findings indicate that the upper limit of nursing ability is 10 suckling young or so per lactating mice used in the experiment., Article, 信州大学農学部紀要 10(1): 11-20(1973)}, pages = {11--20}, title = {マウスの哺育能力の限界}, volume = {10}, year = {1973} }
