One strain was found to contain (+)-piperitenone oxide predominantly, while another strain obtained by the back crossing was established to give (-)-trans-carveol as the major constituent of the essential oil. It is noteworthy from the chemotaxonomical point of view that a new trans-carveol strain was raised by crossing between M. spicata var. crispa with 2n=48 and crispa with 2n=54.
