It is found that each of the observation points belonging to the array has its own preferred direction of strong amplification, that is to say, the directional site resonance. The predominant directions of 8-10Hz strong ground motions due to S-waves appear to reflect both the directional site resonances and the polarization characteristics of incident waves. For the events with MJMA≥5.0, since the degree of polarization of incident waves is low probably because of their large fault dimensions, the predominant directions of strong ground motions tend to reflect the directional site resonances.
