In this century many authors investigated the efficiency of planetary gear trains. The calculation of the efficiency of planetary gear trains fundamentally differ from those of stationary gears with the carriers locked to the housings. Calculation of the efficiency of planetary gear trains is more difficult than that of stationary gear trains. In this paper, the author treats the derivation of efficiency formulas for planetary gear systems, and a simple and clear method for calculating the efficiency of planetary gear systems is obtained. For calculating the efficiency of planetary gear systems, these formulas require knowing only the number of teeth and the efficiency of the stationary gear trains.
