Pore air pressure in unsaturated clay being compacted is measured by using porous stones set up in the triaxial apparatus. If the degree of saturation is more than 90 %, c' and φ' are in accord with results of fully saturated clay. If the degree of saturation is less than 90 %, we should take capillary effect into consideration. The failure envelope of saturated clay intersects that of unsaturated clay at a point. The pore air pressure at the point amounts to the back pressure which is needed to get the degree of saturation of 90%.
