When the nonlinear inductance is excited by the current of a certain frequency, the subharmonic of half the frequency oscillates in the tank circuit composed of the nonlinear inductance and a capacitance. Such two second-subharmonic parametric oscillators are excited by currents with a phase difference of 180 degrees, respectively. The voltages with a phase difference of 90 degrees oscillate in the tank circuit of two parametric oscillators. Thus single-phase AC power is converted into two-phase AC power. Furthermore, it is converted into three-phase AC power by Scott's connection. Single-phase AC power of frequency f is converted into two-phase or three-phase AC power of frequency f/2 by using only inductance and capacitance. The experimental results of the conversion of single-phase AC of frequency 60 c/s into two-phase AC and three-phase AC are treated. The nonlinear inductance makes use of an iron core. The conversion characteristics of two-phase and three-phase AC versus input single-phase AC and DC bias current show that the operation of the converter is very good. The conversion efficiency is nearly 90 % in favorable conditions. When the converter is excited by the current of the single-phase full rectified wave, the phase converter having no frequency change is obtained. But this efficiency is nearly 20 %. In this paper, the polyphase rectifier using the converter is described as an application.
