Surprisingly, RP-HPLC, mass spectrometry (MS), and MS/MS analyses showed that CwIQ produces two products, 1,6-anhydro-N-acetylmuramic acid and N-acetylmuramic acid, thus indicating that CwIQ is a bifunctional enzyme.
