This study was designed to evaluate the effects of extracellular matrix collagen on rat preantral follicles in culture. Rat preantral follicles isolated from 5-week-old rat ovary were cultured individually in 96-well plates for 10 days with McCoys '5a medium containing pepsinized soluble collagen or cross-linked collagen (1.5 or 0.75 ug/ml). No difference was observed in follicular growth, survival rate, granulosa cell proliferation, or oocyte growth between collagen-treated follicles and controls.
