Organogelators generally have not only amphiphilic groups such as amides, ureas, carboxylic acids, and hydroxyls, but also hydrophilic segments such as long alkyl chains and aromatic rings; therefore, most organogelators are water-insoluble. One of the simplest strategies in order to form hydrogelators is the introduction of charge into organogelators. The successful conversion of L-lysine-based organogelators into hydrogelators is achieved by linking the positively charged groups. Another approach is the introduction of a negative charge that is simply achieved by conversion of the ester to a carboxylate (alkali metal salt).
