Transverse compression characteristic of yarn and fabric is important factor influencing tactile evaluation of cloth. However, evaluation of transverse compression characteristic of yarn is not established and does not evaluate as compression modulus. In this study, evaluation of transverse compression characteristic of yarn and the relationship of compression characteristic of woven fabric were studied. With the testing machine developed for compression of fiber, the compressive characteristic of yarn was measured. The compression modulus of yarn was calculated based on the compression theory of elastic round bar. The relationship of the compression modulus and yarn structure were shown. The compression characteristics and the tactile of fabrics woven with different yarn were examined. The softness of a woven fabric is not related with the softness of yarn. This depends on structure of yarn in a woven fabric. The feel of woven fabrics became hard when the twist was reduced in order to soften the yarn. The liking of woven fabric was influenced compression resilience.
