This is based mainly on the result of “The Fourth National Survey on the Natural Environment conducted by EPA Japan. We took a part in the research on natural lakes in Nagano pref.For this investigation，39 lakes having as urface area larger than 0.01 km' were selected. These many lakeslocate in the northern part of Nagano area. According to the trophic state，39 lakes were classified into five groups (eutrophic: 8，m esotrophic: 13，o ligotrophic: 13，a cidtrophic: 2a nd dystrophic :3) . The natural state of lake environment was judged based on the ratio of the length of natural shore line to the whole length of its shore line. The lake located over 1，500 m have been preserved mostly in the natural state. Most of them were located in special protection areas such as a national park. The lake environment at the lower altitude tends to deteriorate.
