Addition of 30uM EDTA to the medium completely suppressed the absorption of copper,whereas cadmium was abundantly absorbed even in the presence of 100uM EDTA. Addition of ammonium ion to the medium suppressed copper absorption and not only reversed the growth inhibition caused by copper,bu t accelerated the frond multiplication. The uptake of cadmium was slightly suppressed by ammonium ion and frond production reduced by cadmium was not greatly improved by an increase of ammonium concentration. Initial pH had no effect on the accumulation of copper,bu t the absorption of cadmium was increased with a high initial pH.
