 note = {James Daffy, the hero of  “A Painful Case”, is a middle-aged bachelor who is dependent only on his own resources, keeping himself aloof from the confusion of the world around him. He encounters a married woman, Emily Sinico, at a concert. They have a friendship he wishes to deem spiritual. When the friendship starts to evolve into emotional dimensions on her part, he interprets her sudden gesture as a loss of self-control and breaks off with her. Four years later he happens to read the newspaper account which reports the details of her death.
