Rakugo implicates its story-teller. But the story-teller's technique of presenting stories is not taken into account here. The analysis is solely based upon the standard text of rakugo.One of the important sources of funniness in rakugo is the violation of speech act rules, which is found mainly in conversations between characters. The types of violations are as follows: (1) inappropriate persons and circumstances, (2) inappropriate responses to questions, requests, etc., (3) inappropriateness based upon the misunderstanding of utterances or circumstances, e. g. saying irrelevant things,the literal interpretation of metaphorical expressions, etc., (4) unconventional speech acts, e. g. breaking 'phatic communion' rules, etc. , (5) illogicality or lack of cohesion within the sentence, between sentences, or in discourse, (6) misleading or wrong information provided, and (7) the inadequate quantity of information provided., Article, 信州大学教養部紀要. 第一部, 人文科学. 第二部, 自然科学 16: 19-32(1982)}, pages = {19--32}, title = {落語の意味論}, volume = {16}, year = {1982} }
