This report is continued from the themes,\"Nature in the Literature of Naoya Shiga\" in the 49th year and \"Natl'lre 'in the Literature of Yasunari Kawabata\" in the 50th year of Sh6wa. We alte making a study of \"Nature and the view of Nature in ]apanese literature\", and as a part of our study we took up Kafu Nagai. The reasons why we took him up are the following; his literature is closely connected with Nature, as are Naoya Shiga's and Yasunari Kawabata's, and we think that Nature in the literature of Kafu has a original and pequlia'r meaning.This report is the summary of our opinions at the joint discussion, but in the process of making notes we supplemented them in part and picked out a< few works besides \"Furansu-Monogatari\" and \"Bokut6-Kidan\".Seen through the novel \"Bokut6-Kidan\" and the essay \"Hiyori-Geta\" l want to consider the problem of Nature in the literature of Kafu Nagai. His many works can be seen under the titles connected with the natural scenery and the strong sense of the season. The opening sentences of many novels begin with the descriptions of nature. We can caU the nature loved by Kafu a social nature or a cultural nature,not Nature as the whole creation. The nature in Kafu is closely connected with \"shitamachi\" section of Tokyo remaining the Edo culture and the old humane feelings.And his view of nature is not a matter of taste, but comes to be a criticism against the advance of the city civilization. Nishimura)In Kafu Nagai's works the changes of nature, such as the change of season, the transition of day and the flowing of river, are of particular importance.The author liked to take a walk through an alIey. In the monotonous alley it 永井荷風の文学における自然 Ki泊dan\"s試to町ryis 0ぱfwalk. Kafu symbo1izing art，So， essays， beauty， was， dirty， noisy， disagreable life， gr巴en significance 27 is absolutely necessary to have a dynamic image of nature. In the novel \"BokutoKidan\" the story is c10sely related to the scenery of the back street at the time of his walle (T. Fukazawa) Kafu Nagai's view of nature resembles a painter's view of nature. His method of symbolizing nature seems to depend upon that of the traditional Japanese art,making light of the low of the perspective. So, natural beauties of hills and waters are always indispensable in his fictions or in his essays, even the very image of the womanhood might be one constituent of the landscape. Eager seeker of natural beauty, as he was, he could not be content with the dirty, noisy, disagreeableliving conditions in the modern urban life, which lacks completely the peace and harmony of the rural life. Therefore he always tried to find some green plants even in a zigzag alley amongst of the crowdest streets. This is the real significanee which he can present us today. (K.
