Though Shakespeare's religion is not clear, it will be admitted that Shakespeare was conservative in his beliefs which are expressed in his plays. In appearance he belonged to the Church of England whose leading pnnciple of "via media" is observed through his works. From the point of view of dramaturgy, Shakespeare in his "King Lear" adopted the manner of morality plays which makes use of symbols of abstract ideas such as benignant nature and malignant nature. And the main theme of this play is the salvation of Lear. On his way to salvation, Lear through his suffering and passion became humble and patient, being conscious of his own fault. But the salvation of Lear needed the sacrifice and redemption of the sinless Cordelia. Here we can see that man's salvation needs not only man's free-will based upon benignant nature, but also something supernatural which may be called God's grace. And this theological idea is clearly expressed in the Thirty-Nine Articles of the Church of England. Though this tragedy is situated in a pagan world before Christ, the Christian idea of man is hidden under the garments of the Stoicism of Seneca surrounded by conflicting modern European thoughts after the Renaissance and the Reformation., Article, 信州大学教養部紀要. 第一部, 人文科学 8: 57-70(1974)}, pages = {57--70}, title = {自然と救済:"King Lear" の主題を求めて}, volume = {8}, year = {1974} }
