手良沢山演習林では，シカ，カモシカによる立木への被害が問題となっているが，木材生産，教育研究，社会貢献など事業の多角化により，獣害対策を万全に行えない現状にある。そこで，学生実習による獣害対策の試みとして，被害の深刻なコウヤマキ植林地において2016年に立木調査から間伐までを実施した。立木調査の結果，全175本のうち125本（71％）が被害を受け，長さ2m
