"信州大学農学部・伊那キャンパスの内に現存する横井戸について現地調査、終戦直後の文章の解読および関係者への聞き取り調査をした。信州大学農学部の前身である長野県農林専門学校の設立場所を確定する決め手の一つと考えられている通称「芋ノ田」の横井戸や伊那盆地の水利に関する学校あての八木貞助氏による「地下水調査報告書」（1947）を学内で見つけ、現代文に読み直した。その報告書によると、(1)伊那町は湧水資源が多く、(2)伊那段丘上部の扇状地には多数の横井戸があったが、(3)長野県農林専門学校（1945年4月15日）が作られた地籍である「芋ノ田」には1本の横井戸しか無く、(4)農学の教育施設としては水が不足していること、(5)横井戸が有効なので開発が必要であることなどが指摘されていた。明治期に約1.8 m（6尺）の竪井戸を複数掘り、それを接続して総延長約720 m（400間）の横穴を掘って横井戸にして7ha を開田したとされており、石碑の文章と現状の竪穴から推定した横井戸の長さと一致していた。また、現地調査以外にも、西箕輪での聞き取り調査をした。この結果から、上伊那の扇状地の横井戸の中で「芋ノ田」はこの地域では比較的大規模で、現存することから、重要な歴史地理的文化遺産であると考えられた。",
