 note = {This survey investigated (a) the Order in which Japanese university students say their names to foreign people in English and (b) the reasons why they choose such orders of family and given names. A questionnaire was admimistered to 65 1st-year Japanese university students. First, 35.4% of the participants wrote their names in Japanese order (i.e., family name + given name), Whereas 61.5% used the reverse order. Second, 30 of the participants (46.1%) changed the order of their names according to where the interlocutor was from. Of the 30, 21partcipants chose the reverse order for an American and a Hungarian and the Japanese order for a Chinese. Third, the most frequent place where the participants had learned the reverse order of names was elementary schools (41.5%). Lastly, most participants answered that they preferred either order (47.7%).
