A questionnaire was admimistered to 65 1st-year Japanese university students. First, 35.4% of the participants wrote their names in Japanese order (i.e., family name + given name), Whereas 61.5% used the reverse order. Second, 30 of the participants (46.1%) changed the order of their names according to where the interlocutor was from. Of the 30, 21partcipants chose the reverse order for an American and a Hungarian and the Japanese order for a Chinese. Third, the most frequent place where the participants had learned the reverse order of names was elementary schools (41.5%). Lastly, most participants answered that they preferred either order (47.7%).
