The results indicated that ‘Kaida kabu’ has a wide range of interstrain variation and retains a high level of genetic diversity. This may be due to the large number of seed saving farmers and genetic exchange among them. In the past, different strains of local turnips were known to exist in the Nishino and Suekawa districts, which divide the Kaida kougen, but now they are collectively known as ‘Kaida kabu’ and there is no difference between them. However, the results of a principal component analysis using morphological data of the roots showed that there were differences close to those recognized by farmers. It is also suggested that the ‘Pink kabu’, which is clearly separated within the same area, may have been produced by selecting individuals mutationally defective in pigment synthesis from the ‘Kaida kabu’.
