For each species, a total of 40 palmate leaves were collected from sites where leaves had developed on the shoots of an individual; thus, 10 leaves were collected from both the lower and upper layers of plants in a community, and 10 leaves were collected from both previousand current-year shoots. Various morphometric traits of the leaves were examined. The results showed that the number of leaflets per palmate leaf and the number of serrations per leaflet, considered to be important characteristics of Akebia species, showed marked differences among the three species. The former character clearly discriminated AT (which typically has three leaflets) from AP and AQ (which typically have 5 leaflets), whereas the variation of the latter character was so large that AP (with serration) could occasionally not be discriminated from AQ (without serration). Leaf shape (length:breadth of leaflet, and largest leaflet:smallest leaflet) also differed among species: the length:breadth ratios were in the order AQ > AP > AT, and those for largest leaflet:smallest leaflet were AP > AQ > AT. In AP, a significant negative correlation was observed between the number of serrations per leaflet and length:breadth for leaflets, i.e., more rotund leaflets tended to have more serrations The traits concerning leaf size were generally lager in the upper layer than in the lower layer of plants, and in current-year shoots than in previous-year shoots. The traits related to leaf size were weakly correlated with the number of leaflets per palmate leaf, number of serrations per leaflet, and leaf shape.
