Then he researches Edmund Burke Feldman's criticism-based art learning that consists of four steps: description, formal analysis, interpretation and judgment (evaluation). Referring to both Ishikawa's and Yoshikawa's theories and on the basis of Feldman's idea, he regards reading literacy as important ability and proposes the seven-stages-program of art appreciation. In the latter half of this paper, he picks up Gentile da Fabriano's altarpiece made with tempera in the International Gothic Style, Adorazione dei Magi (1423) as a subject to learn in a reading-oriented manner. After describing this artwork generally, he investigates following fundamental aspects to consider: ①a religious (Christian) painting and texts as its imagery sources, ②fabricating pictorial areas by visualizing (illustrating) texts, and ③temporal structures and sequential relations among various depicted parts.
