The following eight terms were chosen as retrieval keys for database search; motivation, locus of control, intrinsic motivation, attribution theory, self efficacy, self regulation, self regulated learning, and learning strategies. The number of journal articles on motivation increased steeply in the late 70s, presumably after the publication of Deci(1971). As for studies on the subordinate categories of motivation, `locus of control' and `attribution theory' were the most popular research topics after 1970s, But, they hit a peak in 1980s and declined thereafter.
