"作家・北杜夫（1927～2011年）（本名：斎藤宗吉）は，『どくとるマンボウ航海記』『楡家の人々』「輝ける碧き空の下で』などの作品で知られ，また自身が精神科医であり，かつ躁うつ病に罹患していたことを公にしたことでも有名である。北杜夫を病跡学研究の対象とするにあたり，序論である本稿では，双極性障害と診断することの妥当性を検討した。エッセイ等の資料から躁病エピソードと抑うつエピソードを概観し，DSM－5の診断基準と照らし合わせた。その結果，「双極1型障害」と診断した。また特に，初回の躁病エピソードといわれている39歳時から5年間の気分変動に着目したところ，「急速交代型」「混合状態」の特徴を有した時期があったものと考えられた。",
