To verify occurrence of PPARα-independent peroxisome proliferation, fenofibrate treatment was used, which was expected to significantly enhance PPARα dependence in the assay system. Surprisingly, a novel type of PPARα-independent peroxisome proliferation and enlargement was uncovered in PPARα-null mice.
