We retrospectively studied 12 surgically treated patients with UC followed in our surgical department in the period between 1996 and 2001. All patients underwent total colectomy and subtotal proctectomy, and ileo-anal canal anastomosis (IACA). Compared with total proctocolectomy and ileo-anal anastomosis (IAA), IACA was technically simpler and yielded better continence.But some IACA patients needed postoperative local administration of corticosteroid for the control of inflammation in the remnant mucosa ; however, this inflammation was well controlled.
