[Methods] Subjects were 124 patients : 54males (mean age : 79.0,SD6.7) and 70 females (mean age : 79.1,SD 6.1). The items surveyed included changes in the independence of patients' ADL in eating, toiletting. walking, getting up ; the Barthel Index upon admission and discharge ; the frequency of usage of the care center; the number of family members living with the patients; their main caregivers and their reasons for admission. [Results] (1) 60-70% of patients were improved or maintained their ADL level upon discharge in comparison with their admission scores. (2) 80% of patients have lived with two or more family members. (3) 60% of the main caregivers were daughters-in-law, and 20% were wives. Half of these daughters-in-law had jobs, while the wives were older aged. (4) 60-70% of patients returned to their homes. (5) The main reasons for admission were due to lack of caregiver support.
