Toads breed immediately after their emergence which occurs throughout the period from late April into early May. There are three main breeding spots in the lake. Air, soil and water temperatures around breeding spot B, called B-region, where the toads seem to hibernate, were measured from late March to early May in the years 1974-1976. It was found that the initiation of the emergence was nfluenced by the underground temperature : over an observation period of three years, the emergence occurred when the soil temperature at a depth of 20 cm rose more than 6.6℃. Occasionaly, precipitation stimulated the initiation of the emergence. Also, the times of the emergence in the years 1967-1973 corresponded well with the estimated values of the underground temperature at a depth of 20 cm calculated from air temperatures of Matsumoto City : the emergence began when the estimated temperatures rose more than 6.7-7.3℃, except for the years 1967 and 1969 in which a heavy snow fall occurred in the middle of April. It is not certain whether or not the emergence of the toads is influenced directly by the soil temperature at a depth of 20 cm. However, the underground temperature at this depth seems to be a good indicater to use to estimate the time of the spring emergence of the toad. (Jour. Fac. Sci.
