| 内容記述 | 1. Symbolism from the historical point of view was a movement in art and literature of the latter half of the 19th century. But it must be considered from the standpoint of ontological and anthropological background in Europe. II. Ontology of symbolism is based on dualism of being and value, necessity and possibility, and of phonomenon and essence. Symbolism is a human effort to overcome this contradiction, or this absurdity, making these contradietory elements complementary to each other by the medium of symbols. III. Anthropology of symbolism is based on the Fall of Man, or on the human self-consciousness of his own limit of power. IV. The aesthetic method of symbolism is to express indefinite character of hidden reality by the medium of indirect suggestions, i. e. symbols. This method brings about obscurity in communication of meanings of ideas. The main agency which makes symbols is imagination, which is a power of artistic creation, disclosing reality or truth, breaking the cover of convention and common Seillse world. Images made by imagination may be called symbols. V. Symbolism is not only a movement in literature but also an attitude of those who know the limit of humanity and want to be critical avoiding any dogmatic monism of partiality. | |||||||
