内容記述 | Alfons Dopsch attempted in his "Grundlagen der Europaischen Kulturentwicklung" to explain his theory of historical continuity covering the gap between the decline of Roman Empire and the rise of Corolingian dynasty. He used the method of archaeology, place-names and written sources to solve the problem. But in spite of his utmost efforts, what he could explain was nothing more than the continuity of human life at Roman towns in Germany. He could not explain the continuity of municipal life. In my belief Roman municipal life was completely destroyed and there is a gap between the fall of the Roman cities and the rise of medieval cities and I would rather see the historical continuity of life in the Gap itself. And this Gap forms a transitional stage and in it was carried out the amalgamation of Romanism, Germanism and Christianity. History developed with rhythm of death and resurrection. The rhythmical waves of vicissitude of death and resurrection is the essential key to the mystery of historical life. | |||||
