内容記述 A Study on the Interchangeability between 'THE' and 'A or An' as the Generic Article Tokio WATANABE When a species as a whole is to be generically described, which article should be chosen, the definite article (the) or the indefinite article' (a or an)? Are there any occasions on which one article and not the other is best suited? 'The answer is definitely 'yes,' and the object of this paper is to try to. identify the language situations, syntactic as well as semantic, where one is to the other. The definite article is different from the indefinite in quality; the former is more philosophical, more abstract and therefore more formal than the latter. This difference may have something to do with the historical backgroUJ.)d of the respective article. Thus when the very concrete idea of one species is meant to be presented, one member of the species is choseR and appea-rswithiR an utterance in the form 0f [A (AB)' +N]. When the abstract phase of the idea of a sl'leci'es is implied, the definite article is preferred. So in such sentences, as 'The chiM is fa'ther of the man,' 'YOtI can see the' Woman in' the little girl,' the reference is rather to a quality than to a person understood in a generalizih'g way. Proverbs, which try to offer certain philosophical implications, arertaturally inclined to use the definite article much more frequently than the indefinite article in presenting something generically. The differences of the uses of the d~fihife and the indefinite article are partly syntactic. A simile and a comparison can suffice to explain this. 'She is always busy as a bee. ' is acceptable but not 'She is 'afway~ busy as the bee. 'When you talk about cats as well as dogs as a species, 'A cat is not so yigJIant as a dog.' sounds very natural but 'The cat is not so vigilant ,qS the dog.' does The examples I have just mentioned are only part of t'he whole ,storY I have revealed in this paper.
